Executive Director, Riddle Fence Inc.


The Executive Director is responsible for all aspects of the promotion and sale of Riddle Fence, for coordinating its various fundraising activities, and for the general business management of Riddle Fence Inc. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director identifies and pursues new promotional venues and maintains current venues. He/she is responsible for maintaining Riddle Fence Inc.’s financial records and its subscription database, for selling advertising, and for expanding the journal’s subscription base. The Executive Director is also responsible for maintaining communication with the members of the Board of Directors as well as with the Managing Editor, taking Board minutes and assuming other administrative duties as determined by the Board.


·      Exemplary demonstrated organizational and effective interpersonal/communication skills
·       Exemplary written communication skills
·       Experience in non-profit administration, public relations/promotion, media relations, communications, publishing and/or community outreach highly desireable, previous magazine publishing experience also highly desireable
·      Computer proficiency and an excellent knowledge of Adobe, Excel, Microsoft Word, Photoshop, etc.

Poetry Reading by Riddle Fence Contributors

Riddle Fence will host a reading by poets Danielle Devereaux and James Langer, at the Ship Pub, Solomon’s Lane (St. John’s), on Tuesday, July 27th at 8 p.m. Both poets are St. John’s natives and recent contributors to Riddle Fence.

The reading is free and open to the general public. Finger foods will be provided. Books, copies of Riddle Fence and Riddle Fence subscriptions will be available for sale.

Readers’ bios:

Danielle Devereaux has recently moved back to St. John’s from Montreal. Her unpublished poetry manuscript, which is still in progress, was shortlisted for the 2009 Fresh Fish Award for Emerging Writers. Her poetry has appeared in a number of literary journals, including The Fiddlehead, Arc, and Riddle Fence.

James Langer is a poetry editor for The Fiddlehead. His poems have been published in numerous literary journals, including TickleAce, lichen, Arc, Grain, Event, The Fiddlehead, The Newfoundland Quarterly, The Antigonish Review, and Riddle Fence. Originally from St. John’s, Newfoundland, he now lives in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Call for Submissions, Riddle Fence #7

Riddle Fence is currently accepting submissions for its seventh issue. We are considering previously unpublished submissions of fiction, creative non-fiction, and for the first time, artwork.

Please note: We are not accepting unsolicited submissions of poetry for this issue; we will resume accepting poetry when we place our call for submissions for issue eight.

Please send no more than 1 piece of prose (max. 5,000 words) OR 3 pieces of artwork. Payment is $30 per printed page of text and $30 per image (plus a copy of the issue in which your work appears) for first Canadian serial rights.

The deadline for submissions is September 1, 2010.

E-mail submissions can be sent to the genre appropriate email address below. Please submit text as Word or Rich Text Format attachments and include it in the body of your email; please send images as JPEGs (minimum 300 dpi):

SPARKS Literary Festival

Riddle Fence will be attending the SPARKS literary festival at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s on Sunday, January 17, 2010 at the Petro-Canada Hall, School of Music. The festival runs from 10:30 AM – 6 PM.

SPARKS is a day-long literary festival sponsored by the Faculty of Arts at Memorial University. It celebrates contemporary Newfoundland writers and writing. The festival will feature readings and discussions, book and journal displays, author signings, and letterpress publishing.
